Cat's Claw (3% Alkaloids)
Herbal medicine derived from the bark of Uncaria tomentosa vine in the Amazon River basin in South America that can grow up to 98 feet tall.
Used to treat fever, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, and the symptoms of chronic inflammatory conditions (GI, rheumatological)
Used for anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, anti-mutagenic and immune modulating effects. Oxindole alkaloids. Name comes from hooked thorns.
Protects cells against oxidative stress and negates the activation of NF-kappaB
Work by decreases TNF alpha levels by inhibition of NF-kappa B signaling, a findining that has been claimed to be the biologic basis for its anti-inflammatory action
Also has polyphenols and catechins found in bark have antioxidant actions
Dose: 30-300 mg daily.
Warning: Has high-levels of tannins.
Side Effects: Usually minor, may include nausea, GI upset, diarrhea. No issues with liver, but does inhibit CYP3A4 activity.
